The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine has seven clinical education campuses and more than 50 affiliated hospitals and facilities across the entire state. Over 400 students and countless faculty make up the Grand Rapids and MSU East Lansing campuses. The College of Human Medicine is ranked #6 of 141 U.S. medical schools for their overall social mission—graduating MDs from minority backgrounds who practice in primary care or who work in underserved areas.
Challenge
The College of Human Medicine migrated to a new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum in 2016. This learning approach integrates clinical experience with classroom learning throughout the students’ medical education program. As the first Shared Discovery class reaches the end of their medical program, new areas of campus had to be upgraded to meet the needs of their small group study.
The small group rooms at the Grand Rapids and East Lansing campuses were 10-year-old rooms previously optimized for PowerPoint presentations on LCD screens. These posed a problem for IT/AV as more and more support issues arose from the antiquated technology.
The College of Human Medicine had to find a new interactive display system for the 12-13 small group rooms at both campuses.
Solution
The X7 and X9 of Newline’s X Series proved to be the perfect fit. These displays allow for collaboration and annotation directly on the screens in each small group room. Most notably, the non-proprietary platform made it easy for the IT team to install infrastructure items such as Conduit.
With a short timeframe of just one month, Newline was able to quickly deliver and install all the new displays in time for the first day of the school year. The X7 and X9 displays added features supporting the Shared Discovery Curriculum including better collaboration, video conferencing with Zoom, wireless connection, and the ability to save on-screen annotations.
Results
Small group rooms were instantly booked for use after the installation and have been fully functional since day one. The X Series fit the College of Human Medicine’s need for collaboration, videoconferencing, and annotation capabilities to improve the new curriculum learning experience. The College of Human Medicine noticed that faculty and students became more comfortable with all the available features with the X7 and X9 displays. There has already been an improvement for IT/AV support, having to field fewer issues in the small group rooms.
