Newline XRT Series: taking Digital Signage into outdoor environments

Digital communication has become an essential part of the experience offered to customers, visitors, students and employees. Until now, many organisations have concentrated that communication inside receptions, classrooms, corporate spaces, shops and hospitality venues. Yet people’s journeys do not end at the door. Entrances, patios, campuses, terraces, transit areas… also need information that is clear, current and visually engaging.

The Newline XRT Series extends Newline’s Digital Signage portfolio into these new environments. Building on indoor solutions such as STV+ and DSX, XRT is the next step: a range purpose-built for professional visual communication outdoors.

Visibility in demanding ambient light

An outdoor display faces very different light conditions from a screen installed inside a building. The XRT Series provides 2,500 nits typical brightness to help content remain clear and vibrant in high-ambient-light environments. Organisations can use it for promotions, menus, wayfinding, notices, schedules or institutional information in locations where a conventional display may lose impact.

4K resolution allows text, photography, graphics and video to be presented in fine detail. A 178-degree viewing angle also supports readability from different positions, which is particularly valuable in areas where the audience is constantly moving.

Purpose-built for outdoor applications

XRT features IP56-rated construction and is designed for all-season outdoor use. Its protection against dust and water supports a broad range of environments without the need for an additional protective enclosure, provided the display is installed and operated in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.

XRT also carries an IK10 rating, the highest level of protection on the IK scale against external mechanical impacts. Its robust, secure and durable construction is designed to withstand intensive use, making it well suited to high-traffic environments such as public spaces, educational institutions, retail locations and transport hubs.

The range supports 24/7 operation, an important feature for projects that need information to remain available around the clock. Portrait and landscape orientation add further flexibility. Portrait is well suited to directories, wayfinding and promotional messages, while landscape can support menus, timetables, notices and panoramic content.

Five sizes for different spaces and viewing distances

The series is available in 43, 55, 65, 75 and 86 inches. This breadth supports compact locations as well as larger environments. Choosing a size should not depend on available wall space alone. Viewing distance, text size, audience movement, content type and the objective of the communication should all be considered.

A display close to an entrance may prioritise short messages and strong calls to action. An installation across a campus or transit area may require larger typography and content that can be understood from further away. An integrator or display specialist can help relate these variables to an appropriate screen size and location.

Connected content that is easier to manage

A Digital Signage solution delivers value when its content remains relevant. The XRT Series incorporates Android 14, Wi‑Fi 6 connectivity and Newline Signage Pro integration. Together, these capabilities allow XRT to become part of a broader communication strategy and help organisations coordinate content according to their own requirements.

A display network can be used to update campaigns, communicate changes, adapt messages by location or schedule content for specific times. Before deployment, organisations should define who owns the content, how often updates are required and how approval workflows will operate.

Applications across multiple sectors

In retail, XRT can support promotions, opening information, seasonal campaigns and communication around entrances or storefronts. In hospitality, it can be used for menus, opening times, events, directions and guest information. Across education and campuses, it creates new possibilities for notices, activities, wayfinding and community communication in courtyards and outdoor areas.

The range can also address requirements in corporate environments, leisure facilities, public venues and transport-related projects, subject to a proper assessment of the installation and environmental conditions. The key is not simply to move an indoor campaign outside. Outdoor content should be designed to be concise, legible and relevant to people who are often on the move.

From display selection to project planning

The success of an outdoor installation depends on more than the display itself. Location, power, mounting, connectivity, exposure, security, maintenance and content strategy should be considered from the outset. It is also important to validate local availability, select the appropriate model and identify any site-specific requirements.

XRT broadens the possibilities of Newline professional communication, connecting indoor spaces with new outdoor touchpoints. For organisations considering a project, the next step is to define the objective, audience, location and content, then share those requirements with a specialist.
